Haile-Mikael’s story
When self-employed builder Haile-Mikael's leg was crushed by a digger at work, surgeons at Leeds Major Trauma Centre explained that his injuries were so severe they might need to amputate his leg.
Having moved to the UK from Eritrea, Haile-Mikael had no family by his side. He worried that his injuries would stop him returning to the job he loved. The accident left him without an income and he didn’t know how he would survive.
Day One Caseworker Marianne helped Haile-Mikael navigate the benefits system and organize hospital transport, ensuring he could attend his outpatient appointments.
Haile-Mikael said: “Without Marianne’s help I would not have been able to sort my benefits claim out, I would not be able to pay my rent, I would have had no income at all. I didn’t know where to start because English is not my first language. I am feeling better every day, I am starting to walk and making good progress. I hope to return to work next year.”
