Ruby's Story
Ruby is a 26-year-old nurse who in August 2021, while on maternity leave, was out shopping with her six-month-old baby. Whilst in the shopping centre car park, Ruby was struck by a vehicle and pinned between the car and a van.
Ruby was taken to the Aintree Trauma Unit. Due to the severity of her injuries Ruby’s right leg had to be amputated, and her left leg sustained such severe crushing injuries that there were concerns it would also be lost. However, the Trauma Team managed to save her left leg which was put in to an external fixator.
Ruby received support from Day One and through them was given the details of Irwin Mitchell, one of the firms on Day One’s Legal Panel. Irwin Mitchell made prompt contact with the insurer of the vehicle which hit Ruby, and by working collaboratively with them was able to secure a residential stay for Ruby for 10 months in a unit where she could also have her baby with her. Ruby’s rehabilitation, including prosthetics, was funded by the insurer under the auspices of the Rehabilitation Code. Ruby’s focus has always been on maintaining her role as a mother for her young child, and by him being with her in the rehabilitation centre she was able to progress her physical development whilst also learning how to care for him with the restrictions placed on her by her serious injuries.
Ruby is now back home in Liverpool and has recently completed on the purchase of a new property which will be adapted to meet her needs, and enable her to live independently with her son.
