Patient story
A dad with a young family had an above the knee amputation on his right leg after being hit by a car as he walked along the pavement.
He was in Leeds General Infirmary for three months, worried about whether he would return to work and how he would support his family.
A Day One caseworker was able to offer legal advice while he was on the ward, allowing the family to choose a suitable legal firm.
He contacted Leigh Day and on instruction they made a claim against the Motor Insurers’ Bureau (MIB) as the driver responsible for the collision was uninsured.
A specialist Case Manager was appointed to support his rehabilitation including private treatment, inpatient rehab specialist equipment and prosthetics. Interim compensation was paid to cover lost earnings and other expenses.
Leigh Day secured a six-figure interim payment so he could buy and adapt a new home. Specialist architects were brought in to ensure it was adapted for his long-term needs.
He is now recovering well and has been provided with a microprocessor knee to allow him to move easier, and an adapted wheelchair-accessible vehicle.
The claim is ongoing but his needs are being met thanks to the interim payments secured due to his early legal support from Day One and Leigh Day .
Leigh Day will continue to work with rehab experts to establish what his lifelong needs will be and complete the claim so he can continue to live a full and active life.
